Many of you may be unaware of this, but the MLS has a great Disciplinary Committee in place for simulation (also known as diving). It’s an increasing problem in soccer, as players seek to gain an unfair advantage through a referees’ indecision. As a former ref, let me tell you, it’s impossible to see everything. Players, coaches, and the fans can all impact a decision made by a referee on the pitch.
This is why I believe a review system must be in place, and it’s great to see it working so well in the MLS. Fines for diving are in the $1,000 range, with no suspension policy in place as of yet. Maybe the English Premier League or the Champion’s League can learn from this.
